External hard drives used to be expensive luxuries that transferred data between the PC and the drive at a relative snail’s pace. But thankfully, that has all changed within the last couple of years.
Prices have now dropped to where you can pick one up starting at around $50 and the new USB 3.0 models are quite speedy.
Here are a three reasons why I recommend an external USB 3.0 hard drive for every computer user:
1 – Creating Backups – An external hard drive is perfect for backing your hard drive. Windows 7 and Windows 8 both make it extremely easy to create a disc image of your PC’s internal hard drive onto an external drive, which in turn makes it easy to recover from a severe virus attack or hard drive failure. And trust me, backing up to an external hard drive is a lot more convenient than backing up onto a stack of blank DVDs!
2 – Portability – Like a USB thumb drive, a USB hard drive makes it extremely easy to save photos, videos and other files from your computer and share them with any other computer that has a USB port. But with an external hard drive you can store and share so much more!
3 – Efficiency – Storing most of your files on an external hard drive will keep your C: drive from getting cluttered up with files that you only use every now and then. A less cluttered internal hard drive means a faster running system and less chance of hard drive failure or corruption of your Windows installation.
